The oceanic influence is clear on the plateaus of the west and on the volcanic mountains of the Cantal, Sancy and Dômes, directly exposed to oceanic disturbances. The continental influence is present in the central regions with lowest rainfalls in winter while the Mediterranean influence with its abundant autumn rains, plays on the south-east edge of the Haute-Loire.

The plains of Limagne are protected by the Foehn effect.
