Economy

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is a heavyweight of the national and European economy . While the activity tends to be tertiary, the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region retains strong agricultural and industrial activities.

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is made up of 12 departments . With an area of nearly 70 000 km 2, it is the second largest region in France and the 8th largest economy in Europe with a GDP higher than Ireland or Portugal . With strong contrasts between developed rural areas and large urban centers, the region has an unemployment rate below the national average.

The sectors hiring the most in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes are transport, trade, real estate and public service . The city of Lyon and its surroundings concentrate an important banking and financial sector . In Grenoble, it is the CHU which is the first employer of the tertiary sector. In Clermont-Ferrand, banking services are booming, such as management services.

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region presents an economic landscape made of industrial specializations. While the Michelin Group employs nearly 500,000 people, the chemical industry and textiles are also two major axes of the regional economy. With Sanofi, Boiron, Bayer or Mylan , the pharmaceutical industry is also very present. The segment most represented in the region remains the manufacturing of machinery and equipment with companies such as Bosch, Caterpillar or Alstom.

With an important agriculture in the region , characterized by the modest size of its farms and by its great diversity (fruit, wine, cattle breeding etc.), the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes occupies the 2nd place of the French regions in the organic production.

From a tourist point of view, the region is very popular with French and foreign tourists, whose annual consumption represents 19.7 billion euros . Thanks to a wide variety in its offer, the region is the 2nd most tourist of France . Numerous natural, cultural and sporting sites of the first rank, such as the Savoyard ski resorts, the Confluences museum, the Chauvet cave or the Montenvers-Glace railway in Chamonix are real tourist attractions for the region.
