In terms of temperature, the region is divided into an eastern half, where winters are cold but not extreme and summers are hot but not unbearably so, and a western half, where both winters and summers are milder. To the south of the Paris Basin and north of the Massif Central, rainfall varies significantly depending on whether the landscape is flat or hilly. Overall, the west of the region is driest.
Legend has it that the river Loire separates the colder, northern regions from the warmer regions of the south. The Centre region enjoys blue skies and long summers, with temperatures averaging 17 to 20°C in the summer months. Occasional rainfall ensures that the scenery is lush and green. Winters are relatively mild, with average daily temperatures of around 8°C in the coldest months. March sees spring start to creep in and temperatures rise to between 10 and 15°C. Autumn is also relatively mild, with average daily temperatures ranging from 15 to 11°C at the end of the season.
